Mississippi College Win 2023 GSC Indoor Track & Field Crown

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 2023 Gulf South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship drew to close on Wednesday from the Birmingham CrossPlex, with Mississippi College hoisting the men's title.

The Choctaws won its second men's indoor title, first since 2021, with 195 total points, while Lee finished second with 185 points. Alabama Huntsville rounded out the top three with 105 points. 

Following the meet, Lee's Cale Kassan was named the Most Outstanding Overall Performer with Mississippi College's Al Ferrill taking home most Most Outstanding Field Performer honors. Alabama Huntsville's Michael Gizzi was named Most Outstanding Track Performer while Tommy Rodriguez claimed Most Outstanding Freshman accolades.

The final day began with remaining events for men's heptathlon and by the end of the morning the field events were concluded. Following lunch were the track events starting with the mile and ending with he 4x400 relay. 

Mississippi College's Niklas Klei won the 400-meter race, clocking in at 47.89, eclipsing the previous 60m mark of 7.96 set by UAH's Wilson McClain in 2022.

Lee's Cale Kassen then set a championship meet record in the 60m hurdles, as he logged a time of 7.85. Klei's run surpassed the previous championship record of 49.50 set in 2020 by MC's Rakeem Wilson. Kassen's performance

Alabama Huntsville's Michael Gizzi took the podium's top step in the 60m (6.71) and 200m (21.16) in record-setting fashion. Gizzi performance in the 60m eclipsed the previous mark of 6.82 which he set last season, while his 200m performance bested the previous GSC event mark of 21.53 set in 2022 by MC's Fabio Palmieri. 

Lee closed out the men's events by winning the 4x400 in a record time of 3:14.67, trimming nearly six seconds off the previous record of 3:20.02 which CBU set in 2020.
