Two GSC Football Teams to Play in NCAA Postseason

INDIANAPOLIS — Two Gulf South Conference teams—Delta State and West Florida—will represent the conference in the 2022 NCAA Division II Football Championship.

The announcement marks the first time since 2019 only two GSC teams will compete in the NCAA postseason, but is the eighth-consecutive year two or more teams will be in the tournament.

The Statesmen enter as the No. 2-seed and will host Fayetteville State from the CIAA in the first round. DSU is making its first NCAA postseason appearance since 2017 and 10th all-time. The Statesmen have one national title (2000) and will enter with a 15-8 record in the postseason. 

The Argonauts meanwhile are the No. 3-seed and will begin their tournament bid against Limestone from the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). UWF will make its third-consecutive NCAA trip and fourth in the last five seasons. The 2019 national champs are 9-2 all-time in the NCAA postseason.

Opening round action of the NCAA Division II Football Championship will take place Saturday, Nov. 19, with second round set for Nov. 26. The region championship is scheduled for Dec. 3. The national semifinals will be played Saturday, Dec. 10 with the national title returning to McKinney, Texas on Saturday, Dec. 17.

  • Gulf South teams are 134-81 all-time in the NCAA postseason.
  • GSC teams have advanced to the national title game 22 times, including a representative in the last five-straight seasons.
  • As a conference, the GSC has 13 NCAA national titles in football, including back-to-back crowns in 2018 (Valdosta State) and 2019 (UWF).
