GSC Football Recap: Week 1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Gulf South Conference continued to leave its mark as it picked up three non-conference wins, while watching Delta State, West Alabama and West Florida each improve to 2-0 on the season.

Strong quarterback performances resulted in victories for Delta State and West Alabama on Saturday. The Statesmen dominated North Greenville, 41-9, and were led by quarterback Cole Kirk who accounted for five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) and 322 yards of offense. As a result, Delta State head coach Todd Cooley earned his 77th career victory becoming the winningest coach in program history. The Tigers meanwhile picked up a 38-28 road win at Chowan. They were led by Spencer Arceneaux who had a four-touchdown performance (two passing, two rushing), while registering 181 passing yards and 80 rushing yards.

West Florida was also victorious on Saturday as the offense produced 395 yards in a 28-7 win at Kentucky Wesleyan. The Argonaut defense meanwhile surrendered just 183 yards, highlighted by -26 rushing yards from the Panthers. Individually, Jay Sharp had 178 total yards of offense and three touchdowns for West Florida as he ran for 81 runs and made three catches for 97 yards.

Valdosta State meanwhile slipped to 1-1 on the year after falling to Johnson C. Smith, 28-16. The Blazer offense was led by Eric Watts who rushed 92 yards while the defense was led by a 10-tackle effort by Julius Pascal.
