AUM, West Alabama Earn Wins to Open GSC Softball Championship

OXFORD, Ala. — The 2026 Gulf South Conference Softball Championship began Wednesday, May 6 with No. 2-seed West Alabama and No. 3-seed AUM collecting the opening wins at Choccolocco Park.
 
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, No. 4 Montevallo vs. No. 5 Mississippi College (Game 3) and No. 1 West Florida vs. No. 8 Trevecca (Game 4) were pushed to Thursday, May 7. The tournament will resume at 9 am CT with Game 3. All following contests will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous game. AUM 9, UAH 5 | Box Score
  • AUM scored five runs in the second to lead early before pushing the score to 8-3 after four, eventually ending its scoring with a run in the fifth to provide the final margin. The Chargers scored three in the third and plated two more in the fifth. 
  • Reese Cauley put together a solid all-around effort for AUM, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and RBI, while tallying her 27th-win of the season. 
  • Including Cauley, seven AUM batters had a hit as it finished with 12-6 advantage in the hit column. 
  • Brittany Slatten led UAH hitters with a 2-for-4 day at the dish, while Ashley Grace went 2-for-3. Jill Cockrell was 1-for-2 with two walks. She and Slatten also had two-RBI each.
  • Katie Bracken was charged with the loss. 
 
West Alabama 3, Valdosta State 2 (9 Inn.) | Box Score
  • With one-out and two runners in scoring position, Jessica Rose lifted West Alabama with a game-winning sac fly, allowing Ella Watson to score the deciding run in the ninth inning.  
  • Valdosta State led 2-0 after the first as it garnered unearned runs from Saylor McNearney (0-for-3, 1 BB) and Carly Bogart (1-for-3, 1 BB).
  • ShaKeria Washington (2-for-3, 1 BB) then had a two-run homer in the second to tie the game.
  • In the circle, Valdosta State’s Vallad (8.2 IP/3 H/3 R/7 BB/6 K) was charged with the loss while Eleanor De Block (9.0 IP/3 H/2 R/3 BB/6 K) picked up her 23rd-win of the year.
