Valdosta State Wins Third Consecutive GSC Men’s Tennis Tournament Championship

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the third year in a row, the Valdosta State men’s tennis team secured the GSC Men’s Tennis Tournament Championship after the Blazers defeated West Florida, 4-1, on Saturday at Lagoon Park.

The top-seeded Blazers won their third-straight title by defeating Christian Brothers, Mississippi College, and West Florida while only conceding one point in the process. Valdosta State now has a conference-leading 17 GSC titles. 
 
CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
 
The match began with Valdosta State earning a close doubles point with wins on courts two and then one. On Court two, the duo of Arthur Bord and Edgar Destouet secured a 6-3 victory, while Takeshi Taco and Xaveam Van Wijk eked out a thrilling 7-6 victory to clinch the point. 
 
Valdosta State would go on to dominate in the singles portion of the match beginning on court five where Jan Skerbatis secured a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Court two would also see a straight-set victory as Destouet prevailed 6-3, 6-0. West Florida’s Diego Duran would keep the Argos alive on court four with a 6-0, 7-5 win. All eyes would shift to court two as Boruch Skierkier won 6-3, 6-4 to clinch Valdosta State’s 17th GSC Men’s Tennis Championship. 
 
With the win, Valdosta State also clinched the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championship. West Florida and the rest of the GSC will now wait to hear their names called on the NCAA Selection Show, which will transpire on Monday, May 5, at 7 PM CT.
