ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Valdosta State reeled in its fourth National Championship by defeating Washburn, 4-2. This is the Gulf South Conference’s 56th National Championship and the second in as many days for the conference.
The Blazers came into the match undefeated and looking to become the first full season undefeated men’s tennis team since Barry completed this feat in 2015. The match began with Valdosta State securing the doubles point as the duo of Takeshi Taco and Xaveam Van Wijk and the pairing of Jan Skerbatis and Boruch Skierkier secured victories.
Action would shift to singles play where Taco would earn a win over Washburn’s Tim Hammes (6-1, 1-6, 6-1) on court one. Washburn would then come storming back with wins on courts five and two to knot things up at two. Edgar Destouet would then pick up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win on court three over Pavlos Parson, setting the stage for rookie standout Julien Doitteau on court six. In a three-set affair, Doitteau would drop the first set 4-6 to Matthew Earle, but would rebound in a big way by taking two straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to seal the National Championship victory for the Blazers.
Valdosta State is the first Division II men’s tennis program to win back-to-back titles since Barry won three consecutive titles from 2021-23 and the 10th program in DII overall. The Blazers are also the first Gulf South Conference team to complete this feat since West Florida did so from 2004-05. They also finished the season undefeated at 26-0.
