BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Four hundred ninety-three student-athletes across four sports were named to the Winter 2023-24 Gulf South Conference Academic Honor Roll, while 37 were selected for a GSC All-Academic Team. The sports honored included men's and women's basketball as well as men's and women's track & field.
 
The overall count correlates to an all-time record number of student-athlete honorees during the Winter sports calendar dating back to the academic award program's inception during the 2008-09 academic year. As a a result, the 493 honorees equals about a 14.7 percent increase from the year before and up near 39 percent since 2019-20. Alabama Huntsville and Montevallo led the way with conference-best 75 student-athletes listed on the Honor Roll.

The conference also announced its GSC All-Academic teams for men's and women's basketball, as well as men's and women's indoor track & field. In total, 37 student-athletes were recognized with one of the conference's top academic awards. Overall, 10 of 13 member institutions were represented with at least one All-Academic team selection. Mississippi College led the way with 14 All-Academic selections, while Lee followed had eight. 
 
To achieve honor roll status, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or better and have competed in outside competition at the time the award was announced.

To be named to the GSC All-Academic team, nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better their entire academic career at their institution and may not be a freshmen or first-term transfer. The student-athlete must also be a significant contributor to the team. Other factors include leadership, community service, and extracurricular activities. Institutions are not allowed to vote for their student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.

 Winter 2022-23 Academic Award Highlights:

• 493 student-athletes were named to the GSC Honor Roll list, up about 14.7% from last season. Basketball had 216 total honorees (123 women, 93 men), while indoor track & field had 274 (141 men, 127 women).
• Making the Grade: 52 percent of Honor Roll student-athletes posted a 3.5 GPA or better, 31 percent had a 3.75 or better, and 68 (14%) had a 4.0—up 21% from 2022-23.
• UAH and Montevallo each had a conference-best 75 student-athletes listed on the Honor Roll.
• 10 of 13 schools had at least one All-Academic Team member. 
• Mississippi College led the way with 14 All-Academic selections, Lee followed with 8, UAH had 3, and Shorter had 2.
