GSC Unveil Fall 2023 Academic Awards

A record 1,197 student-athlete were named to the Honor Roll list

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — One thousand ninety-seven student-athletes across five sports were recognized on the Fall 2023 Gulf South Conference Academic Honor Roll, while 78 student-athletes were named to the GSC All-Academic Teams. The sports honored for both awards included men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and volleyball.

The overall count correlates to an all-time record number of student-athletes honorees during the Fall sports calendar dating back to the academic award program’s inception during the 2008-09 academic year. As a result, the 1,197 honorees represents a nearly three percent increase from Fall 2022. It also saw a modest uptick in student-athletes recording a 3.50 GPA or better, increasing from 705 to 712, while those who recorded a 4.0 remained relatively level.

The conference also unveiled its GSC All-Academic teams for men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and volleyball. To achieve honor roll status, a GSC student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 of better out of a possible 4.00 at the time the conference announces the award.

To be named to the GSC All-Academic team, nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better their entire academic career at their institution and may not be a freshmen or first-term transfer. The student-athlete must also be a significant contributor to the team. Other factors include leadership, community service and extracurricular activities. Institutions are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
