LAKELAND, Fla. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced the South Region Player of the Week as Mississippi College’s Alex Johnson and the NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week as West Alabama’s Baker Green.
Johnson hit .400 (6-for-15) with five runs, eight RBI and three home runs across four games last week. The senior also posted a .471 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage as the Choctaws went 3-1 on the week. Johnson’s week was highlighted with a 4-for-5, two-home run, five-RBI performance against Arkansas-Monticello. He then added a three-run home run helping the Choctaws clinch their series at AUM with a 9-3 win in game two.
Green recorded a complete-game shutout against Valdosta State, as he was credited with a 4-0, and improved to 3-0 on the season. The senior threw 9.0 innings with two strikeouts and surrendered zero walks and eight hits in the outing. He is the first Tiger to work a nine-inning complete game shutout in over a decade.
Johnson was previously named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, is the conference's second offensive player to earn regional honors. Green, the reigning GSC Pitcher of the Week, is also the second conference hurler to receive region recognition this season.
