BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Gulf South Conference announced Montevallo’s Derek Moore (player) and Mississippi College’s Phil Nelson (freshman) as its ninth men’s basketball weekly award winners of the 2025-26 season, following their performances from Jan. 12-18.
GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Derek Moore., Sr., F, Montevallo
Moore averaged 36.5 points and seven rebounds as Montevallo picked up a win in GSC play. The senior forward shot 88 percent (7-for-8) from the field and 78 percent (7-for-9) at the line for 22 points in a 101-83 loss to Valdosta State. He then set a program record for points with 51 and tied the program record for made free throws with 20, while adding eight rebounds in a 97-87 win at West Florida. This is Moore’s second GSC Player of the Week award of the 2025-26 season as he also earned it Dec. 2.

GSC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Phil Nelson, Fr., G, Mississippi College
Nelson had 19 points, five rebounds and three assists to help Mississippi College go 1-0 on the week. The rookie went 5-for-10 from the field (.50) and 7-for-9 (.78) at the free-throw line to register 19 points in a 69-65 win over in-state foe Delta State. He led the Choctaws in scoring and helped secure the win by shutting down a late charge by the Statesman. This is Nelson’s second GSC Freshman of the Week award of the 2025-26 season as he also earned it Dec. 9.
