West Florida Men’s Golf Wins Third Division II National Title After Thriller

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – On a day where lightning would suspend play, West Florida is the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Champions after defeating Colorado Christian in a nailbiter.

RESULTS

The Argos were making their first National Title Match appearance since 2018. This is the 55th National Championship win for the Gulf South Conference as a whole and the second men’s golf title in four years. Lee was the last Gulf South Conference men’s golf National Champion back in 2022.

Per Ekelund and Fabian Wennerlof would pick up wins in the title match. Ekelund would defeat Colorado Christian’s Sangha Park by five strokes with a 69 three-under par showing, while Wennerlof downed Xavier Bighaus by a single stroke with a round of 69 three-under golf.

With Colorado Christian on track to win the match 3-2, TJ Thompson led a furious comeback in his match. After being down four strokes heading into the 13th hole, Thompson steadily chipped away at the deficit to eventually tie the score up after the 17th hole with a clutch birdie. Things would stay knotted up at 70 two-under par, forcing a playoff to decide the National Championship. West Florida would then go on to win the playoff, and in the process, the program won its first National Title since 2008 and its third in program history.
