Three GSC Men's Hoops Teams Head to NCAA Postseason

Three Gulf South Conference men’s basketball teams—Alabama Huntsville, Montevallo and Valdosta State—were among the 64-team field that made up 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. It marked the seventh consecutive season the Conference placed three or more teams in the NCAA postseason and the 23rd time since the 2000-01 campaign.

The tournament will begin with regional play and will tip-off with first round action on March 15th, while the region title game is slated for March 18. The South Region bracket will be played at Rick Case Arena in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and hosted by top-seeded Nova Southeastern. The remaining teams from each of the eight regions will advance to the DII Men’s Elite Eight, March 25-29, at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.

After capturing the GSC regular-season and tournament titles, Alabama Huntsville received the GSC’s automatic bid and was tabbed as No. 2-seed in the South Region. The Chargers (30-1) will face seventh-seed Tampa from the Sunshine State Conference in the first round, with tip-off set for 1:30 pm CT. UAH will make its 16th trip to the NCAA postseason and will look to advance out of the region stage for the first time since 2012.

Valdosta State, the GSC tournament runner-up, will play in its first NCAA tournament since 2019. The Blazers were at-large selection and picked as the No. 4-seed in the South Region. VSU will open its postseason run against fifth-seeded Lynn University of the Sunshine State Conference. Tip-off between the Blazers and Fighting Knights is scheduled for 6:30 pm CT.

Montevallo returns to the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2007 and one of just two active GSC members to reach the DII Elite Eight twice since 2000. The Falcons (20-10) are the South Region’s sixth-seeded team and will face third-seeded Florida Southern from the SSC. Tip-off is slated for 11 am CT.

GSC teams have combined for eight DII Elite Eight appearances since 2000, with Montevallo making back-to-back trips in 2006 and 2007, while UAH did the same in 2011 and 2012. The conference has won three NCAA Division II national titles with North Alabama’s title in 1991 being the last.
