GSC Women's Basketball Semifinals Matchups Set

The 2024 Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championship began on Tuesday with quarterfinal round action. Valdosta State, Lee and AUM all avoided upsets, while Union rattled off a convincing double-digit win. 

The tournament with resume on Saturday, March 9 with semifinal action from the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala. Top-seeded Valdosta State will face No. 4-seed AUM with tip off slated for 12 pm CT. Meanwhile, Union and Lee will take the floor at 2:15 pm CT.

Valdosta State 54, West Georgia 52

  • Valdosta State staved off the upset to reach the semifinals for the fourth consecutive season. 
  • VSU's Taylor Searcey had a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, six steals, five assists and two blocks.
  • West Georgia was led by Sydne Tolbert's 10 points, as she was a rebound shy of the double-double.
  • The Lady Blazers led 36-29 at halftime.
  • UWG led 52-50 with 1:44 left in the fourth, but the margin was erased 32 seconds later with a three-point play by Searcey. 
  • UWG had a 40-26 advantage in rebounds, while edging out VSU in shooting percentage, 37-32.8.
  • Valdosta State was 8-for-9 from the free throw line.

Union 90, Delta State 71

  • Union, the defending tournament champs, reach the semifinals for the seventh straight season and ninth-time overall. 
  • Union led 51-29 at halftime.
  • Five Lady Bulldogs scored double-digits points, led by 17 from Shanique Lucas as she 6-for-10 from the field and 5-for-8 from behind the arc. 
  • Delta State had four double-figure scores led by Grace Watson who finished with 16 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
  • Union shot 41 percent (32-for-79) from the field and made 15-of-44 (.341) from three-point range. 
  • Union also finished with s 43-32 advantage in rebounds and controlled second-chance points, 28-11.

Lee 61, Mississippi College 52

  • Lee advance to its ninth consecutive semifinal appearance.
  • Lee's Mallory Hampton led all scorers with 28 points behind  6-of-18 from the field and 15-of-16 from the charity stripe.
  • Lee's Addison Smith had a game-high 10 rebounds and added nine points.
  • Mississippi College's Amelia Bell had a team-high 19 points.
  • Lee led at the break, 29-26.
  • The Lady Flames were 16-of-49 (.326) shooting from the field, while the Lady Choctaws were 12-of-55 (.218).
  • Mississippi College had a 21-8 advantage in second-chance points.
AUM 74, West Florida 70
  • In its first-ever GSC postseason appearance, AUM advanced to the semifinals. 
  • AUM had three double-figure scores, led by Grace O'Gara with a game-high 28 points. Navaeh Small finished with 13, while Tian Addison had 12. 
  • West Florida was led by Claire Sutherland-Case's 16 points and 13 rebounds. 
  • AUM led 45-39 at the break. 
  • The Argonauts had a 40-35 advantage in rebounds and while converting 25-of-53 (.472) from the field.
  • The Warhawks were 27-for-68 (.397) from the floor and held a 23-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
