GSC Unveils 2024 Men's Soccer Awards

The 2024 Gulf South Conference men's soccer major awards were split between four teams, while nine teams were represented on the All-GSC teams. The All-GSC teams and major awards were voted by the league's head coaches, who could not vote for their own student-athletes.

Mississippi College forward Lewis Matton took home Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Defensive Player of the Year was shared by Christian Brothers goalkeeper Vicent Sanchis Olmedo and West Florida defender Keegan Lynch. Cristobal Porter from Montevallo garnered Freshman of the Year while West Florida's Bill was tabbed Coach of the Year.

Christian Brothers and GSC regular season champion West Florida finished with a league-best six All-GSC selections apiece. Mississippi College followed with five, while Auburn Montgomery had four selections. Lee and West Alabama had two each, while Alabama Huntsville, Montevallo, and Union each had one.

Matton posted a league-best 14 goals, placing fourth among Division II leaders. Sanchis Olmedo led the conference in goals against average (.456), save percentage (.865) and shutouts (five). As a result, the Spanish-born graduate keeper ranked third in Division II in save percentage and fourth in goals against average. He started and played in 12 matches for the Bucs, logging 987 total minutes and surrendered five goals on 112 shots face. In league play, he allowed three goals and made 23 saves in eight appearances. Sanchis Olmedo is the second goalkeeper and the first CBU player to win the award.

Lynch tallied eight points, scoring two goals and assisting on four others, for the Argonauts this season. Appearing in 13 of 14 matches for West Florida, the senior defender played in a team-high 1,129 minutes. He anchored the Argo backline that surrendered 18 goals, third fewest in the GSC.

Porter registered a conference-high 62 shots, while also leading the way in shots on goal (26). The Chilean forward led Montevallo and was among GSC leaders in goals (six), assists (six) and points (18). The rookie is the first Falcon to win top freshman honors since Cesare Marconi in 2017.
