West Florida wins 2016 GSC Women's Golf Tournament Title
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - West Florida is the 2016 Gulf South Conference Women’s Golf Tournament Champion, earning the Argonauts their fifth-consecutive GSC title.
In a comeback effort, West Florida improved its score in every round to defeat Lee by one stroke.
The Argos shot 312 and were in fourth place behind Lee, Shorter and West Alabama after the first round, but they rallied with a 294, an 18-stroke improvement, to move into second place on day two.
Coming into the final round, the Argos were seven shots back of the 36-hole leader Lady Flames. West Florida, led by Paloma Vaccaro, Lauren Lamm and Elin Olsson, put together a tournament-low 290 score in round three to knock off Lee and secure another championship.
Vaccaro, Lamm and Olsson, along with West Alabama’s Jessica Smyth, all shot round-low 72’s on the final day. West Florida’s Johannah Nevalinen and Daisy-May Kenny each shot 225 for the tournament.
West Georgia’s Franziska Bremm won the individual title, shooting 73 in each of the three rounds to medal. Bremm came into the final day as the co-leader, but the round started poorly. Bremm bogied and double-bogied on holes four and five, but then rebounded, sinking three-consecutive birdies on the back nine to finish one-over on the day and three-over for the tournament. Bremm’s performance allowed her to sneak past Lee’s Caroline Moore, the 36-hole leader, who finished five-over par.
Following Bremm and Moore, West Alabama's Smyth, Lee’s Callie Kitchens, Shorter’s Gracel Peris and West Alabama’s Savannah Payne rounded out the top five to earn spots on the All-Tournament team.
Payne and West Florida’s Olsson shot the tournament-low scores of 71 in round two while Shorter’s Dallas Vaughn sunk the only hole-in-one of the tournament at the par 3 on hole No. 10 in the final round.
