West Florida Wins 12th GSC Women's Soccer Championship Title

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — West Florida hoisted the 2024 Gulf South Conference Women’s Soccer Championship trophy on Sunday at Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex in Huntsville, Ala., with a 2-0 win over second-seeded Montevallo.

With the victory, the Argonauts secured a conference-best 12th Championship title, their first since 2018, and the Gulf South’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women’s Championship. The Falcons and the rest of the conference will wait to hear their name during the NCAA Selection Show set for Monday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 pm CT and can be seen on NCAA.com.

Five minutes before halftime, Ahnalie Layman gave UWF a 1-0 lead with a goal from a set piece in the 40th minute. The Argonauts then doubled their early in the second half as Emma Beltz found the back of the net in the 49th minute. Both were later named to the all-tournament team.

Maciah Lipsey was named to the all-tournament team after making four saves and tallying her 15th clean sheet of the season. Mya Swinton was also selected to the all-tournament squad and garnered Most Outstanding Player honors. 

Isabel Dillehay, Morgan Goehring and Shadia Valenzuela represented Montevallo on the all-tournament squad. They were joined by Lee’s Kassidy Kellett and Avery Sides as well as Union’s Lucia Garcia and Lucia Revuelto. 

Montevallo outshot West Florida, 13-11, however it was the Argos who held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, 6-3 margin in corner kick. The Falcons finished with a overwhelming 61 percent of possession, however only 18 percent was spent in the attacking third. UWF meanwhile finished with 39 percent of possession with 35 percent of that in the attacking end.
