MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The 2023 Gulf South Conference Women’s Tennis Championship drew to a close on Saturday, with top-seeded West Alabama claiming its third-consecutive title as it downed No. 3-seed West Florida, 4-0.

With the win, Tigers also earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship. The Argonauts and the rest of the GSC will wait to hear their name on the NCAA Selection Show, scheduled for Monday, April 24 at 7:30 pm CT/8:30 pm ET on NCAA.com.

West Alabama claimed the first point of the match as it won doubles in brisk fashion. The tandem of Haina Franco and Ming Deewajee recorded a swift 6-1 victory at court one, while Heden Ly and Hardier Vidnere rattled off a 6-4 decision.
In singles, Franco was the first to finish for the Tigers as she claimed a 6-1, 6-4 decision on court one. Deewajee then followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win from court six to push the West Alabama advantage to 3-0. Then back on court two, Yurie Takanishi secured the overall match point with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
With Saturday’s result, West Alabama became the first school to capture three-straight conference tournament crowns since West Florida won nine in row from 2011-19, while also joining the Argos and Jacksonville State as the only women’s programs to win at least three consecutive GSC tournament titles.
