BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Following an exciting 2022-23 Gulf South Conference women’s basketball season, the league office announced its all-conference and yearly award honors, as voted by the head coaches.
West Florida graduate Jaclyn Jarnot was named GSC Player of the Year. West Georgia rookie Aliyah Washington received Freshman of the Year honors, while Lee’s Marty Rowe was voted as the Coach of the Year.
Jarnot had a stellar year, finishing third among conference leaders in scoring (16.2/game), and was the league leader in rebounding (12.8/game), while notching 17 double-double performances for eighth-best in Division II. The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native was also among the league’s best shooters converting 44.7 percentage (174-389) from the field, while tallying 27 blocks, 55 steals and 66 total assists in 27 games. She is the fifth Argo to win the award and the first since Toni Brewer in 2018-19.
Washington had a productive freshman season finishing as the Wolves’ top scorer, averaging 11 points per game, while shooting 42.9 percent (103-240) from the field. The Dallas, Georgia native was among the conference’s top-20 in points per game (20th), rebounds per game (16th/5.0), and free throw percentage (12th/.717). With the announcement, Washington became the second West Georgia player ever to be named as the conference’s top freshman for a given season, joining 1990-91 recipient Gina Flowers.
Rowe led the Lady Flames to a share of the regular season conference title, finishing with a 21-3 record in league play. Lee opened its GSC schedule in dominate fashion as it strung together a 12-game win streak. This is Rowe's second time winning and first since 2019-20, which was the first and last time Lee won the Gulf South regular season crown.
