GSC PRESEASON POLL — Valdosta State was selected as the league favorite in the annual GSC Preseason Poll as voted by the coaches. The Blazers, who claimed a share of the league title last season with West Florida as both teams finished 6-1, received six first-place votes and are coming off a season that saw them play in the NCAA Division II title game. UWF followed with two first-place votes as it was picked second.
NATIONAL POLLS
- Three GSC teams were recognized in the AFCA Div. II Preseason Coaches Poll – No. 3 Valdosta State, No. 11 West Florida and No. 12 West Georgia. All three teams were also named in the D2Football.com predictions, with Valdosta State at No. 2, West Florida at No. 7 and West Georgia at No. 10.
- During the 2021 regular season, at least four teams were ranked among the AFCA Top 25 with as many as five teams in Week 3. Following Week 1, the league also had at least two teams ranked among the Top 5 in every edition of the regular season poll.

GSC IN THE NFL — Prior to the start of the NFL preseason, the GSC had 12 former football student-athletes competing for spots on the 53-man roster. The Indianapolis Colts led the way with three former players (Brandon Kemp, Kenny Moore, John Hurst). Valdosta State led the conference with four former players (Christan Matthew, Brandon Kemp, Kenny Moore, Jody Fortson) in the NFL ranks, while West Georgia (Auzoyah Alufohai, John Hurst, Tyrell Adams) and West Florida ( D'Anthony Bell, Matt Gotel, Alex Armah) followed with three each.
SEASON OPENERS — Gulf South teams have registered a 53-18 record during the opening weekend over the past nine seasons (2021-12). GSC teams have notched a .600-or-better record in Week 1 eight times during that stretch.
