West Alabama cornerback Legend Doggett was named the D2Football.com Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
With the Tigers trailing 23-17 entering the fourth quarter at Lenoir-Rhyne, West Alabama rallied with 17 points in the final period, highlighted by two touchdowns by Doggett.
Doggett’s first score came with 8:06 remaining in the game, as he returned fumble 40 yards to the end zone, putting the Tigers ahead by a single point. Then in the final two minutes of the game, Doggett abruptly ended a Lenoir-Rhyne drive and sealed the victory with an 80-yard interception return.

The West Alabama graduate student finished with three tackles, a tackle for loss, two fumble recoveries, one interception, one pass breakup and two touchdowns.
Doggett, who was previously named Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, is the conference’s first player to earn national accolades during the 2026 season and first honoree since Week 1 of the 2024 season.
