GSC Men's Tennis Weekly Awards Presented by Athletic Solutions: April 15

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — West Alabama’s Afonso Portugal (player) and Maksim Goncharov (freshman) secured 2026 Gulf South Conference Men’s Tennis Weekly Awards presented by Athletic Solutions, following their performances from April 6-12.
 
GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Afonso Portugal, Sr., West Alabama
  • Helped West Alabama go 2-0 with wins over Mississippi College and Valdosta State.
  • Defeated Mississippi College’s Simon Pfau (6-3, 7-5).
  • Defeated Valdosta State’s Wilson Igbinovia (7-5, 6-2). 
  • Went 2-0 in doubles alongside Maksim Goncharov.
  • Defeated MC’s Avanesyan and Florian Walcher (6-3).
  • Defeated VSU’s Yohann Meunier and Jerome Iaconi (6-2).
Other nominees: Juan Diego Alzate, Delta State; Filipe Krohn, Lee; Pietro Casciola, Valdosta State
 
GSC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Maksim Goncharov, West Alabama
  • Helped the Tigers go 2-0 with wins over Mississippi College and Valdosta State.
  • Defeated Mississippi College’s Mikayel Avanesyan (6-3, 6-3).
  • Defeated Valdosta State’s Emile Delporte (7-5, 6-4).
  • Went 2-0 in doubles alongside Afonso Portugal.
  • Defeated MC’s Avanesyan and Florian Walcher (6-3).
  • Defeated VSU’s Yohann Meunier and Jerome Iaconi (6-2).
