BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Gulf South Conference announced its Football Players of the Week following Week 4 performances of the 2025 season. West Alabama swept the awards as wide receiver Dearrius Nelson (offensive), linebacker Michael McGregor (defensive), return specialist Houston Johnson (special teams), and defensive back Chrissean Jones (freshman) were each recognized.
  
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dearrius Nelson, Gr., WR, West Alabama

• Had three catches and 141 yards with three touchdowns in the Tigers’ 52-44 win at North Greenville.
• Performance was a career-high in receiving yards and touchdowns in a single-game.
• First two receptions were in the second quarter, allowing UWA score in back-to-back drives and turn a 14-14 game to a 28-14 advantage. His third grab came in the fourth quarter went for 72 yards and sealed the game for the Tigers.
• Became the UWA wide receiver to win GSC Offensive Player of the Week since Sept. 11, 2017 (Donta Armstrong).­

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michael McGregor, Gr., LB, West Alabama

• Had a game-high 12 tackles in the Tigers road win at North Greenville.
• Registered nine solo stops and 0.5 tackle for loss.
• Performance was also a career-best for solo and total tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Houston Johnson, Sr., RS, West Alabama

• Returned five punts for 64 yards in the Tigers’ 52-44 win at North Greenville.
• His longest return of the day was 32-yarder in the second quarter that set up the UWA offense for a one-play scoring drive.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Chrissean Jones, Fr., CB, West Alabama

• Helped the Tigers improve to 5-0 on the season with a 52-44 win at North Greenville.
• Tallied two tackles and a pass breakup.
• Played significant snaps late in the contest and helped stop North Greenville’s comeback in the fourth quarter in part due to his pass coverage.
• Marked the first time since 2015 season the Tigers won GSC Freshman of the Week in back-to-back weeks.
