Baseball 2024 All-GSC Teams, Major Awards Announced

OXFORD, Ala. — The Gulf South Conference announced its All-GSC Teams and individual major award winners for the 2024 baseball season, as determined via a vote of the conference’s head coaches.

West Florida’s Darrien McDowell was unanimously tabbed as the GSC Player of the Year, while Lee right-hander Jack Nedrow was named Pitcher of the Year in unanimous fashion. Union rookie Elijah Ramsey garnered Freshman of the Year accolades. AUM head coach Franklin Bush collected GSC Coach of the Year honors.

In all-conference voting, 11-of-13 member schools were represented among the selections. Lee and West Florida each had six honorees, while Lee had a conference-best four First Team All-GSC picks. Shorter and Valdosta State had four total honorees, followed by three from AUM and Mississippi College. UAH, Christian Brothers, Delta State, Montevallo and West Georgia filled out the roster with one pick representative each.

McDowell finished the season as the GSC leader in batting average (.431), slugging (.856), on-base percentage (.545), walks (40), and home runs (20). The junior infielder was also among conference leaders in hits (2nd/75), RBI (t-2nd/63) and runs (t-2nd/60). McDowell is the first Argonaut to win GSC Player of the Year since 2011 (Greg Pron).

Nedrow earned his second career GSC major postseason award—picking up top freshman honors in 2022. The righty was unbeaten on the season posting a 10-0 record in 12 starts and was the conference leader or co-leader in wins, ERA (2.78), opposing batting average (.218) and strikeouts (72). He worked 68.0 innings, going the distance twice with one shutout, en route to becoming the first Flame to be named GSC Pitcher of the Year.

Ramsey became the first Union baseball student-athlete to win a GSC superlative award. In his first season of collegiate competition, the rookie outfielder registered a .273 batting average with 14 RBI on 41 hits. He also slugged .340, had an on-base percentage of .351, and was 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts.

In his first season with AUM, Bush led the team to a 30-win season for just the second time since the program joined the GSC in 2018, after joining 19-31 a year ago. AUM also posted its best-ever finish in regular season conference play flipping an 11-19 record in 2023 to 20-10 in 2024 and second in standings. AUM was also second among GSC teams in RBI (333), third in hits (507) and runs scored (375).

The GSC Baseball Championship will be May 3-7 from Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. For tickets, start times, and more, visit championship central at gscsports.org/bsb24.
