MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Auburn Montgomery women’s tennis won its first-ever Gulf South Conference championship after defeated Mississippi College 4-3 on Monday at Lagoon Park.

The third-seeded Warhawks took down Montevallo, Valdosta State, and Mississippi College in three days to earn the program’s first title and became the first seed lower than two to win the GSC tournament since 2010.
CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
The Warhawks kicked off the match by earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Estefania Garcia and Ane Ibarra won 6-3 on court one, while the duo of Ana Villalvazo and Nahia Izco clinched the point after picking up a 6-4 win on court three.
Mississippi College’s Emma Roberts soon evened the score at one after winning on court five in two sets, 6-1, 6-4. Right after, AUM’s Villalvazo helped the Warhawks retake the lead, 2-1, by earning a win on court three in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. MC’s Anna Hudson then knotted things back up at 2 after winning in two sets against Ibarra on court six. Garcia was the next AUM athlete to earn a point after winning on court one in two sets, 6-1, 7-6. The Choctaws tied the match at three after Ana Julissa De Mata won in two sets on court five, 6-4, 6-0.
Sophomore Regina Urbiola would clinch the title after winning court four on three sets, 4-6, 6-4, and 7-5.
With the win, the Warhawks also earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship. The Choctaws and the rest of the GSC will now await to hear their name on the NCAA Selection Show, scheduled for Monday, May 6 at 7:30 pm CT.
