West Florida Captures 20th GSC Men's Golf Title

UWF freshman Per Ekelund wins individual title, first freshman since 2008

VALDOSTA, Ga. — For the 20th time in Gulf South Conference history, West Florida won the GSC Men’s Golf Championship, while Argonaut freshman Per Ekelund won the individual title. 

West Florida, which has now won 17 times since the turn of the century, finished the 54-hole tournament with a 13-stroke advantage while posting a three-round score of 869. 

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

The final team standings saw Lee finished in second with a tournament score of 882, while Union followed in third at 882. Montevallo was fourth and Montevallo was fifth. Valdosta State was sixth, West Georgia followed, while Delta State, Mississippi College and Christian Brothers rounded out the 10-team field.

Ekelund topped the leaderboard with a tournament tally of 216 after carding a 74 in the final round. As a result, he became the first freshman to the men’s title in 15 years, last achieved by UWF’s Tobias Rosendahl. The victory for the Swedish-born golfer also marks West Florida’s fourth consecutive individual title and eighth in 10 years.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD

The GSC All-Tournament Team meanwhile consisted of Ekelund, Montevallo’s Eric Boutwell and Harrison Hughes, Lee’s Oliver Lewis-Perkins, and Union’s Gray Campbell.

Boutwell and Hughston finished tied for second at 217 after 54 holes. Lewis-Perkins and Campbell finished one-stroke back for a share of fourth. 

The teams will now turn their attention to the NCAA postseason and will await their fate as the Division II region championship field will be announced Friday, April 26 via press release on NCAA.com. The 2024 NCAA D2 South/Southeast Men’s Golf Championship will be held at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga.
