The Gulf South Conference announced its baseball weekly award winners for week 12 of the 2024 season, based on performances from April 15-21.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Darrien McDowell, Jr., 1B, West Florida
McDowell had a productive week as he was 8-for-14 (.571) at the plate with 12 runs scored, nine RBI and four home runs, while West Florida went 2-2 and clinched a spot in the GSC tournament. The junior first baseman also slugged 1.429 and posted a .739 on-base percentage, while drawing seven walks. In the GSC series at AUM, McDowell hit .727 (8-11) with two or more hits in each of the three games. He opened the series with five RBI as he belted two home runs in a 15-7 win. He then homered once in the next two games while going 3-for-4 in game two before notching a 3-for-3 day in series finale. This is McDowell’s second award of the season, he previous won GSC Player of the Week on March 4.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Eli Snelson, Jr., RHP, Union
Snelson notched his fourth win of the season last week as Union defeated Montevallo, 2-1. The junior right-hander was credited with the complete-game victory, recording a 1.00 ERA in nine innings, while allowing one run and scattering three hits in the outing. Snelson faced 31 batters and posted a .107 opponent batting average, eight strikeouts and three walks. This is the first GSC Pitcher of the Week award for either Snelson or Union this season.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Luke Collier, Lee
Collier helped Lee to a 3-1 on the week, including a GSC series sweep over Delta State, after hitting .364 (4-11) with four RBI and five runs scored in the four-game schedule. The freshman infielder went 1-for-4 in a loss to North Georgia to begin the week, before going a combined 3-for-7 against the Statesmen. Collier’s week was highlighted by a 2-for-3 performance in game two of the series which also included three runs scored and two RBI in a 17-2 win. This is Collier’s fifth award of the season, after previously winning GSC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 26, March 11, April 1 and April 8.
