The Gulf South Conference announced its baseball weekly award winners for week 11 of the 2024 season, based on performances from April 8-14.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Riley Black, C, R-Jr., Lee
Black helped Lee to a 3-1 week which included a GSC series win over Union as he went 6-for-12 (.500) at the plate with nine RBI and four runs scored. The redshirt-junior catcher had five extra-base hits as he tallied two doubles, a triple and two homers en route to slugging 1.333 and a .571 on-base percentage. In conference play, he was a combined 5-for-9 (.556) hitting. Black opened the three-game set with a double and home runs while scoring once and driving in seven RBI in the 13-2 win. He then doubled and tripled in the second game of the series as Lee won 7-6. Black opened the week with a 1-for-3 showing versus Tusculum as he finished with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. This is his first GSC weekly award of the campaign, and Lee’s third GSC Player of the Week of year.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Coy Martin, LHP, Jr., Shorter
Martin had eight strikeouts in two appearances on Saturday to help Shorter to a series win over UAH. The junior lefty was credited with the victory to move to 3-1 on the year, as the Hawks won the series finale, 9-0. Martin went the distance in the outing throwing six strikeouts while allowing two hits and three walks. He had three perfect innings in the start and allow just one UAH runner to reach scoring position. Maddela began the day with a one-inning hit-less relief appearance striking out two of three batters faced on 11 pitches. This is the first GSC Pitcher of the Week award for Martin and Shorter of the year.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Levi Maddela, 1B, Fr., Shorter
Maddela had a productive week as he hit .333 (4-12) with six runs batted-in and three runs scored while appearing in three of Shorter’s four games. The rookie first baseman also slugged .750 on the week with two doubles and one home run while posting a .385 on-base percentage. He helped Shorter to a GSC series win on the road at UAH as he was a combined 3-for 9 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. He had a two-run homer in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader before tallying two doubles in the series finale. This is Maddela’s second award, he previously won GSC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 5.
