Shorter's Folds Earns Final NCBWA Weekly Honor

DALLAS — The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its Division II Regional Players of the Week awards for the week ending on May 7, 2023. Shorter left-hander Tanner Folds was named South Region Pitcher of the Week.

The redshirt-freshman was named to the All-Tournament team after helping sixth-seeded Shorter shutout No. 3-seed Alabama Huntsville in the opening game of Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship. In his only appearance of the tournament, the southpaw scattered five hits ans tallied three strikeouts while working nine scoreless innings. Folds was the only pitcher in the tournament to throw a complete-game and improved to 11-5 on the year.

With the announcement, Folds became the fifth different pitcher and 14th different player from the GSC this season to capture NCBWA South Region weekly accolades. As a conference, the Gulf South had at least one regional weekly honoree in 12 of a possible 14 weeks, sweeping the awards six times.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates and official votes in the Howser Award Player of the Year, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication and writing contests.
