Union Wins Fifth Tournament Title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Union won its fifth conference tournament title on Sunday as the Lady Bulldogs downed Lee, 58-44, in the 2022 Gulf South Conference Championship presented by TicketSmarter.

Union shot 18-of-56 from the field, while going 18-for-20 from the free throw stripe. It also finished with a 42-34 advantage in rebounding and outscored Lee 24-16 in the paint. The Lady Flames meanwhile were 14-for-49 shooting and 11-of-18 from the charity stripe. 

Jaelencia Williams, who was a member of the All-Tournament and named Most Outstanding Player, was one of three double-digit scorers for the Lady Bulldogs. She and Ashtyn Baker were with a team-high 13 points apiece. Williams also pulled a game-high 11 rebounds. Samariah Thompson meanwhile contributed with 11 points. 

Hannah Garrett finished with a game-high 18 points behind 7-of-19 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point distance. She filled out her stat line by recovering six rebounds and three steals. Haley Schubert chipped in with nine points. Both players also garnered the All-Tournament honors.

In addition to Williams, Garrett and Schubert the GSC All-Tournament also included Union's Shanique Lucas, Kwajelin Farrar from Valdosta State and Delta State's Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse. 

With the victory, Union secured the Gulf South's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II tournament, which will announced the full 64-team field later tonight. The NCAA's selection show is schedueld for 10 pm ET on NCAA.com.
