GSC Announces 2021 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Yearly Awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced its 2021 outdoor women’s track and field yearly award winners, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Chelsea Walker of Christian Brothers was named GSC Track Athlete of the Year,
Tytavia Hardy of Mississippi College was named GSC Field Athlete of the Year, and
Zakiria Holifield of Alabama Huntsville was named GSC Freshman of the Year. Lee's
Caleb Morgan was named GSC Coach of the Year.
Walker set a GSC record with four gold medals at this year's GSC Championship. In just two years, Walker has amassed seven career GSC outdoor gold medals. She has four NCAA provisional marks, and she ranks fourth in the country in the 400m hurdles and sixth in the country in the 100m hurdles. Her other provisional marks are in the 100 meters and 200 meters. This is the second time in her career that she has won this award for outdoor, and she also won the award for the 2020 indoor season.
Hardy is a two-time GSC Field Athlete of the Year for indoor, and now a three-time overall winner with this season's outdoor award. She has three NCAA provisional marks this season (high jump, long jump, and triple jump), setting two of those marks at this year's GSC Championship. At the league's championship event, she shared honors for the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the meet.
Holifield repeats as the outdoor season's GSC Freshman of the Year after also winning the award for indoor. At the GSC Championship, Holifield collected four medals, including an NCAA provisional time in the 200 meters and a gold medal along with a provisional time in the 4x100m relay.
For Morgan, this is his fourth straight GSC Coach of the Year honor for women in the outdoor season. The Lady Flames have won four straight GSC Championships, including this year's title where they had the largest margin of victory during the streak. Lee is currently ranked 19th in the country heading into tonight's announcement of the NCAA qualifiers.
