GSC Announces Baseball Championship Format Change
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference Board of Directors voted to amend the 2021 Baseball Championship format following the NCAA Division II Presidents Council decision to reduce NCAA regional bracket size and subsequent change to regional dates.
The compression of Division II baseball national tournament to a regional round and the finals round created an additional week of competition available to conferences. As a result, the 2021 GSC Championship will be conducted in two rounds. The first round will be held at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama from May 7-11 and will feature eight teams in bracket play to determine two finalists. The second round will be a best-of-3 series between the two finalists hosted by the better seed on May 18-20.
Historically, the GSC has been one of the country’s strongest baseball conferences, winning six NCAA Championships and multiple regional titles. Since 2004, at least two teams from the Gulf South have qualified for the national tournament each year.
