2021 GSC WOMEN'S TENNIS ALL-GSC TEAM
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2021 women's tennis all-conference awards, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
Christian Brothers'
Raquel Amaro and West Florida's
Berta Bonardi were named GSC Co-Players of the Year, while Bonardi's teammate and doubles partner
Sara Yigin was named the league's Freshman of the Year. West Alabama
Jeff Beaman earned GSC Coach of the Year honors.
Amaro is ranked fifth in Division II in singles by the ITA, and Bonardi is the nation's second ranked player. Bonardi is also one half of the nation's fifth best doubles team, partnering with Yigin. In their meeting this season, Amaro defeated Bonardi and finished the season a perfect 15-0 at the top singles spot. Bonardi finished the regular season 14-2 at the top singles spot, falling only to Amaro and UIndy's Nikol Alekseeva, the country's top player.
This is the second straight year that Bonardi has been named the conference's top player, and dating back to 2011, an Argonaut has been named GSC Player of the Year each season. For Amaro, she becomes the first women's tennis player in CBU history to earn this award.
Yigin is 11-2 overall in singles play entering the postseason, playing most of her matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. On the doubles side, Yigin and Bonardi are 12-3 at the top spot and one of the best doubles tandems in the country. Yigin also earned First Team All-GSC recognition. This is the third time in the last five years that UWF has won this award.
Beaman led the Tigers to an undefeated conference season and the top seed in tomorrow's GSC Championship. UWA was also perfect in league play back in 2019, the league's last full season. For Beaman, this is the second time in his career that he has won this award, also winning in 2019.
