GSC Announces 2021 Men's Indoor Track and Field Yearly Awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced its 2021 indoor men’s track and field yearly award winners, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Christian Noble of Lee was named GSC Track Athlete of the Year,
Zach Hancock of Alabama Huntsville was named GSC Field Athlete of the Year, and
Will Grames of Mississippi College was named GSC Freshman of the Year.
Matthew Reneker of Mississippi College was named GSC Coach of the Year.
Noble is one of the most decorated track athletes in the country, and he put together an incredible season for the Flames. Over the weekend, he claimed a pair of national titles in the 3000m and 5000m, the first men’s indoor national titles in league history. During the year, Noble set the NCAA DII record in the 5000m with a time of 13:37.39. This is the second straight year that Noble has won this award.
Hancock is also taking home the GSC’s Field Athlete of the Year award for the second straight year. He held the league’s top mark in both the shot put and the weight throw, and he was the lone student-athlete in the league to surpass the NCAA’s provisional standard in either event. On Saturday, he earned First Team All-American honors in the shot put with a sixth place finish at the national meet.
Grames is the second straight Choctaw to win this award after Daviciea McCartney took home the award last season. Grames was named the Most Outstanding Freshman Performer at last month’s GSC Championship. He was part of the gold medal relay team in the 4x400m and earned the bronze in the 400m. Additionally, he had a fourth place finish in the 200m.
Reneker takes home GSC Coach of the Year honors after leading Mississippi College to the 2021 GSC Indoor Championship. At the meet, three Choctaws earned awards from the league for their performances (Daviciea McCartney, Rakeem Wilson, and Will Grames). The 197 points accrued by MC was the most in the event’s history.
