Trio of GSC Football Teams Make NCAA Playoffs

INDIANAPOLIS — Valdosta State, West Florida and West Georgia will each participant in the 2021 NCAA Division II Football Championship, as announced by the NCAA Sunday evening. This is the seventh-year since 2010 and 15th-time since 1975 that three or more teams have represented the league in the NCAA postseason. 

 OFFICIAL NCAA RELEASE 

Valdosta State will make its third-straight and 17th all-time NCAA appearance. The Blazers, will be the region’s No. 1-seed, after going 9-1 overall and claiming a share of Gulf South Conference title at a 6-1. Valdosta State won the national title in 2018. As the region’s top-seed, it earns a bye to the second and will see how next’s action unfolds.

West Florida will make its third postseason appearance in program-history and will begin its title defense of it 2019 national title as the region’s No. 3 seed. The Argonauts, were 9-1 during the regular season and claimed a share of the league title at 6-1. In the first round, UWF will host South Atlantic Conference (SAC) champion, Newberry, who finished the season at 9-2 overall and 7-1 in league play.

After missing the postseason in 2019, West Georgia returns to the tournament this season for its ninth NCAA appearance. The Wolves finished with the GSC’s second-best record at 5-2, while going 8-2 in the regular season. They enter as one of the region’s three unseeded teams and will visit Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) champion, Albany State, who are the No. 4 seed in the region.

Since the league’s inception in 1975, the Gulf South has a combined record of 130-78, earning 35 national semifinal appearances and has won 13 of the 21 national championship games it has played in.
