Lee Captures 2021 GSC Women's Soccer Title

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Top-seeded Lee defeated No. 7 seed West Georgia, 3-0, on Saturday in the final match of the Gulf South Conference Women’s Soccer Championships at Ashton Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla. With the result, the Lady Flames (19-0) earned the conference’s automatic bid for the 2021 NCAA Division II Championships. The NCAA Selection Show is set for Monday, Nov. 15 at 5 pm CT on NCAA.com.
Lauren Weimer and Anna Lanter each registered goal en route to earning GSC All-Tournament honors following the match. Lee's and Kelsey Yoder was also recognized, while keeper Jacqueline Burns was named Gulf South Championship Most Outstanding Player after recording her 10th clean sheet of the season.
Also earning All-Tournament honors was Hillary Resendiz, Chanceley Book and Janisia Smith from West Georgia; West Florida’s Destiny Hird and Peyton Peffers; and West Alabama’s Kaylah Butterworth and Anele Komani.
The game’s opening goal came in the seventh minute as Ellie Crisler fed Weimer on the far post who slipped in past the defense buried the chance. Twenty minutes later, Lanter gave the Lady Flames a 2-0 lead as she found a loose ball in the box and pushed it into the goal. Katie Wilson then closed the scoring in the 74th as she fired one in from a free kick making it 3-0.
West Georgia (9-8-2) finished game with a slim 51 percent advantage in overall possession, with two of its four shots on frame, in the program’s first GSC championship match.
The Gulf South title is Lee’s second-ever and first since 2017.
