Gulf South Conference Hosts Annual SAAC Meeting
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held their annual meetings this past week in Birmingham.
The festivities started off with a bonding session on Wednesday night, with the participants attending a Birmingham Barons games.
On Thursday morning, the group went to Fairview Park to clean up both the park and the surrounding neighborhood. The group worked with United Way Hands On (formerly Hands on Birmingham). United Way Hands On has the mission of connecting people with meaningful volunteer opportunities and serving those in need while building a stronger, more vibrant neighborhood. That afternoon, participants engaged with multiple presentations. Jen Cole led the group through a session on core values, and Jim Cavale spoke to the attendees on the importance of social media and the reasoning and inspiration behind his company INFLCR. The day ended with Josh Miller from the University of Montevallo counseling department speaking on bystander intervention and the importance of a safe campus community.
On Friday, there were discussions on best practices from each institution, sharing ideas on how to maximize the platform that the SAAC provides. Commissioner Matt Wilson also led an open forum, updating the group on initiatives from the conference office and answering questions about league procedures and policies. Additionally, Brandon Gossett from Neverthirst spoke with the group about their mission and Neverthirst's continued partnership with the GSC.
The GSC SAAC Officers will stay the same in 2019-20. Union's Kristen Pickens will continue to serve as chair, with Lee's Shonna Penney staying on as the Vice Chair. Delta State's Grant Foley will remain the league's national representative, and he provided a national update to the group during the business meeting.
