GSC Announces 2019 Men's Track & Field Annual Awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2019 men's track & field annual awards, as voted on by the league's coaches. Christian Noble from Lee was named the GSC Track Athlete of the Year, DaShaun Morgan earned Field Athlete of the Year honors for Montevallo, Elliott Cummings of Shorter picked up GSC Freshman accolades, and Caleb Morgan was named the GSC Coach of the Year after winning a second conference title with Lee.
Noble becomes the second straight Lee Flame to earn Track Athlete of the Year honors after his teammate Justin Brooks shared the award last season. The junior from Greenfield, Ind. was named the Most Outstanding Overall Athlete at the 2019 GSC Championships after winning the 5000m, 10000m and 3000m steeplechase at Shorter University. His season best steeplechase time of 8:55.03 ranks him first in the entire South Region.
Morgan turned in season best performances in three events at the GSC Track & Field Championships last week, which included a victorious mark of 7.50m in the long jump and a third place finish in the triple jump competition. He is ranked in the conference top five for those two events as well as the high jump this season for the Falcons.
Cummings was outstanding on the track for the Hawks in his first collegiate season, which culminated with a first place finish in the 100m at the GSC Championships. He ran an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time of 10.24 in the 100m last month, a mark that has stood at the top of the South Region for 2019. He also achieved the fourth best 200m time in the conference last weekend in Rome, Ga.
Caleb Morgan is in his sixth season at the helm of the Lee track & field program and recently led his men to a second GSC Championship in the last four years. This is the second time he has been named the GSC Men’s Coach of the Year, previously winning the award in 2016.
