2019 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ALL-GSC TEAMS
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced its 2019 women's basketball all-conference awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. West Florida took home two of the major awards, with
Toni Brewer being named the GSC Player of the Year and
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton picking up Coach of the Year honors. Lee's
Haley Schubert earned GSC Freshman of the Year accolades.
Brewer, a three-time All-GSC selection, was dominant in the paint all season for the Argonauts. She led the conference in rebounds with an average of 10.9 per game and became the new program career leader with 1,159 total boards in four seasons. The forward from Huntsville, Alabama also led the GSC in double-doubles with 19, placing her fourth in all of Division II. She was ranked second in the conference in points per game, just behind her teammate, and fellow First Team All-GSC selection,
Halee Nieman. Brewer is the second Argo in three years to claim the league's top individual award (Alex Coyne, 2016-17).
Schubert collected a league-best six GSC Freshman of the Week honors during the 2018-19 campaign for the Lady Flames. She led all conference freshmen with 317 points and 66 assists, and she ranked second overall in steals. She is the second athlete from Lee to be named GSC Freshman of the Year, joining Haris Price who won the award in 2015-2016.
Yelton is in her seventh season as the head coach of the Argonauts and has compiled a conference record of 91-53 during that time. She led West Florida to 23 wins this year, tying her regular season career-high that was set during the 2016-17 campaign. This is the second time she has been named the GSC Coach of the Year after first winning the award back in 2013-14.
