2019 MEN'S SOCCER ALL-GSC TEAMS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2019 men’s soccer all-conference awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Lee’s Jared McWhorter was named GSC Offensive Player of the Year, West Florida’s Jerry Wiltshire was named GSC Defensive Player of the Year, and West Florida’s Davi Alves was named the GSC Freshman of the Year. Kevin Johns of Mississippi College and Matthew Thorne of Auburn Montgomery were selected as the GSC Co-Coaches of the Year.

McWhorter led the Flames in goals (7), points (16), and shots (48) this season. Three of his goals were game-winners, which was good enough to tie him for first in the GSC. He was also tied for second in the league in conference goals, netting five goals in GSC play.

Wiltshire anchored an Argonaut backline that racked up six shutouts and conceded the second fewest goals (11) in the league. He was among the team leaders in minutes with 1,079 minutes played, and he also chipped in with two goals and an assist. Wiltshire’s also earned First Team All-GSC honors for the second straight season.

This is the first year that the league has honored both an Offenisve and Defensive Player of the Year.

Alves compiled five goals and six assists in his debut season. He tied for the team lead in points (16), and his five assists in GSC matches tied him for the league lead in that category. He was the lone freshman to be named first team all-conference.

Both Johns and Thorne take home GSC Coach of the Year honors for the second time. Johns led the Choctaws to their second GSC regular season title with a 7-0-3 record. His team was stout defensively, leading the league with only nine goals allowed.

In his first year at the helm of AUM, Thorne led the Warhawks to a successful first official season in Division II. AUM finished 9-5-3 overall, 6-2-3 in league play, and will be the second seed in the GSC Championship. Thorne was previously named GSC Coach of the Year in 2017 when he was at West Alabama.
