Lee Tops 2019-20 GSC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll
PRESEASON ALL-GSC TEAM | TOP NEWCOMERS
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference women’s basketball coaches have chosen the Lee Lady Flames as the favorites in the 2019-2020 preseason poll.
Lee grabbed nine out of a possible 13 first place votes. The Lady Flames won their first GSC Championship last season with an 81-73 victory over Valdosta State.
Senior guard Abby Bertram and sophomore guard Haley Schubert are Lee’s Preseason All-GSC selections. Bertram, a First Team All-GSC selection last season and the Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 GSC Championship, averaged 14.3 points and shot over 44% from the field. Schubert (12.0 ppg) is the other key returner, and she will look to build on a season where she won GSC Freshman of the Year and was named to the GSC All-Tournament Team.
Union is second in the preseason poll. The Lady Bulldogs, who won the GSC Regular Season Championship last season, garnered the remaining four first place votes. Despite losing All-GSC selections Morgan Martin and Jada Perkins to graduation, the Lady Bulldogs will return First Team All-GSC guard Jada Smith (15.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg).
West Florida is picked to finish third in the GSC. The Argonauts lost GSC Player of the Year Toni Brewer and First Team All-GSC selection Halee Nieman from last year’s team, but UWF is a perennial power in the league, finishing with a winning record in conference play the last six seasons.
Delta State is fourth in the preseason poll. The Lady Statesmen will return Second Team All-GSC selections Nia Johnson (14.7 ppg, 45.3% FG) and Quantesha Patterson (11.5 ppg, 63.6% FG). Johnson and Patterson are Preseason All-GSC selections for 2019-2020.
Rounding out the top five is Valdosta State. The Lady Blazers will return junior guard Kayla Bonilla (11.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg). Bonilla was Valdosta State’s leading scorer last season and a key part of the team’s run to the GSC Championship Game.
