GSC Announces 2018 Volleyball All-Conference Awards

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2018 volleyball all-conference awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Lee’s
Silvia Sartori has been named the GSC Player of the Year. For the specialist awards, Lee's
MaKayla Beebe has been named GSC Libero of the Year, and West Alabama's
Kassie Till has been named GSC Setter of the Year. West Alabama’s
Jessica Akiona has been named the GSC Freshman of the Year, while her coach,
Alexis Meeks, has been named GSC Coach of the Year.
Sartori is now a four-time All-GSC selection, and she is taking home the league’s top honor for the first time in her career. The senior led the league in kills, averaging 4.46 per set. She also helped lead the Lady Flames back to the GSC Championship for the third straight season. In addition to being named all-conference in all four of her seasons on campus, Sartori was also named 2017 All-South Region.
Beebe wins the inaugural GSC Libero of the Year award, leading the conference with 5.81 digs per set. The senior is now a three-time all-conference selection, and this is the first time she has been named First Team All-GSC. Beebe ranks 23
rd in the nation in digs per set entering postseason play.
Till takes home the first ever GSC Setter of the Year award. The reigning GSC Co-Freshman of the Year led the league in assists (10.61) in her sophomore campaign. She also helped guide the Tigers to a second place finish and a first round bye in the GSC Championship. Till was named GSC Offensive Player of the Week three times this season.
Akiona was named the league’s top freshman and earned a spot on the All-GSC Second Team. The freshman started in every match for the Tigers, averaging 2.54 kills per set and 3.00 points per set. She was named GSC Freshman of the Week four times this season.
Meeks is only the third UWA coach to win the league’s top honor, winning in just her third year at the helm of the program. Meeks guided the Tigers to a second place finish in the GSC this season, the highest finish for UWA since the GSC went away from divisional play in 2011. Four Tigers were named all-conference, and she also coached the GSC Freshman and Setter of the Year.
