GSC Announces 2016-17 Men's Basketball All-Conference Honors
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2016-17 men’s basketball all-conference awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Valdosta State’s
Jeremiah Hill has been named the GSC Player of the Year, while Union’s
Tray Boyd has been named the GSC Freshman of the Year. Valdosta State head coach Mike Helfer has been named the GSC Coach of the Year.
Hill is joined on the All-GSC First Team by Christian Brothers’
Adam Dieball, Delta State’s
Devin Schmidt, Shorter’s
Phil Taylor, and UAH’s
Seab Webster. West Georgia’s
Steph Branch, Christian Brothers’
Jeff Larkin, West Florida’s
Deangelo Legrier, Valdosta State’s
Saadiq Muhammad, and UAH’s
Brandon Roberts make up the All-GSC Second Team.
Schmidt is now just the third player in GSC history to be named all-conference four times, while Webster becomes the 18
th player to earn the honor three times.
Hill led the Blazers to the regular season conference championship and top seed in the GSC Tournament. The senior finished the season fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 19.2 points per game. In addition to leading the team in points, he also led VSU in assists, dishing out 3.9 assists per game. His 54 steals also paced the squad, as did his 932 minutes on the floor. The Blazers currently sit atop the NCAA South Regional Rankings.
Boyd led all freshmen in the league in scoring this season, averaging 15.9 points per game. He was also the leading scorer for the Bulldogs. Boyd has started all but two games this year for Union and finished the regular season averaging 31.0 minutes per game. He finished second in the league in made three-pointers, averaging 3.3 baskets from beyond the arc per game. Boyd was named the GSC Freshman of the Week four times in 2016-17.
For the third time in his career, Helfer has been named the GSC Coach of the Year. Helfer was the GSC East Coach of the Year in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. He is now just the fifth coach in the history of the league to earn the honor on at least three occasions. The Blazers won the regular season title this year and are currently the top team in the NCAA South Regional Rankings. VSU led the league in scoring offense and scoring margin this season.
