2016 All-GSC Men's Soccer announced
Birmingham, Ala. — West Alabama placed a league-high five student-athletes on the Gulf South Conference annual award list, announced on Monday, while annual individual honors went to Mississippi College and Union.
West Alabama led all schools, placing a five student-athletes on the 23-member team, including a league-best three on the Second Team.
Mississippi College, the 2016 GSC Regular Season Champion, had a league-high four on the First Team in its first season of NCAA Division II eligibility. In all, both
Alabama Huntsville and
Lee had three each make the team, with
West Florida,
Shorter and
Christian Brothers all seeing two each honored. Rounding out the list of honorees were both
Delta State and
Union, which had one each named.
GSC Player of the Year
Mississippi College goalkeeper
Humberto Pelaez, a native of Panama City, Panama, earned
GSC Player of the Year honors after going 8-2-2 for his club, including six shutouts, with 55-total saves, during the regular season. He recorded a season-high nine saves versus Alabama Huntsville on 10/2 and, in 13 appearances, only allowed more than one goal twice. The keeper earned a league-best five GSC Defender of the Week accolades (9/6, 9/20, 10/4, 10/18-25) and his 0.87 goals-against average and .833 save percentage were both good for second in the conference.
GSC Freshman of the Year
Union midfielder/forward
Cole Asfour, earned the second-straight
GSC Freshman of the Year accolade for the Bulldogs after Andre Silva garnered recognition a year ago. The North Richland Hills, Texas, native posted 11 points, including four goals and three assists, in 17 appearances this season. He earned one GSC Freshman of the Week honor this season (10/11) and his shining performance came against Alabama Huntsville on 10/7, when he recorded a three-point match with a goal and a helper.
GSC Coach of the Year
Mississippi College head coach
Kevin Johns was named the
GSC Coach of the Year after leading the Choctaws to a GSC Regular Season Championship. Johns, in his 12th season at the helm, guided MC to a 9-2-1 run over its last 12 contests to close the regular season at 10-3-2 (7-1-1 GSC). In its first season of GSC Tournament and NCAA Division II eligibility, MC led the conference in nearly every statistical category. The Choctaws are currently sporting a 2.62 scoring offense to go along with 7.46 points-per-game and 2.23 assists-per-game. MC also has the best team goals-against average (0.89), shutout percentage (0.46) and save percentage (.821).
