Indianapolis, Ind. - Courtney Albritton continued to cement her incredible legacy in Valdosta State Athletics history after being announced as the Gulf South Conference nominee for the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year Award by the NCAA on Thursday.
The
NCAA Woman of the Year is selected based on academics, athletics, service, and leadership throughout the course of a student-athlete's career. Out of the 480 nominees submitted by NCAA member schools for the coveted award, an NCAA record 147 were chosen to represent their conference in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
A multitude of awards have come Albritton's way in recent months on the heels of a stellar career in which the Sycamore, Ga. native set a new mark in the GSC record books with 75 career homers and led her team to three GSC Championships and a National Championship Title in 2012. Albritton's career numbers have elevated the 4.0 Middle Grades Education major into the discussion of the best softball players to ever play at the Division II level. Her career accolades include four All-American seasons, four All-Region honors, four years as an All-GSC member, and three GSC Player of the Year honors. She was also named the GSC Freshman of the Year during the Blazers' 2012 National Championship season, and most recently, secured her second consecutive GSC Commissioner's Trophy.
The nomination places Albritton among a prestigious group of female student-athletes who will represent their conferences at all levels of the NCAA. From these nominees, an announcement of the top 30 honorees, ten from each division, will be made in early September before three finalists are chosen to represent each division. Finally, the members of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will select the winner from the top nine finalists, and the NCAA will announce the Woman of the Year on Sunday, October 18 in Indianapolis.
