Career Highlights
- Served as the head men's basketball coach at West Georgia, Delta State and West Alabama, over a 22-year span.
- His 399 victories are the most by any coach in Gulf South Conference history.
- He won a GSC Title at each institution he coached, 1982 (UWA), 1986 (DSU) and 2002 (UWG).
- He led his teams to 10 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, 1982 (UWA), 1985-86 (DSU) and 1994, 1997-99, 2001-02 and 2005 (UWG).
- While head coach of West Alabama, he also served as the Director of Athletics (1978-83).
- Was head coach of Delta State from 1983-86.
- Tenure with West Georgia as a head coach (1993-2007) also included a time served as the director of athletics (1994-2009).
- Earned an Associate's from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College (Miss.) and his Bachelor's at Hardin-Simmons University (Texas).
- Was an assistant coach at New Mexico State and Wichita State and was a commentator for both Jefferson Pilot and ESPN.
Institutional Statement
"Coach Murphy is the only coach in any sport to lead teams to GSC titles at three different member schools. He not only has won more games than any men's basketball coach in conference history, but he has led his teams to a total of 10 appearances at the NCAA Division II Tournament and was named the GSC Coach of the Year three times."
