Danville, Ala. — First-year Gulf South Conference member Lee University captured its first GSC Championship Saturday, winning the Gulf South Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship at the Oakville Indian Mounds Cross Country Course. Lee is the fourth school in GSC history to win the men’s cross country championship in its first year of eligibility in the sport. The other three are Troy (1971), Northwestern Louisiana (1972) and Harding (2008). It is Lee’s third team win of the season, its first season eligible for NCAA Division II postseason.

TOP PERFORMERS
Shorter produced the GSC Individual Medalist and Freshman of the Year for the second-straight year. Alfred Chelanga claimed both honors, winning the race in a time of 23:53.85 – the fastest time in a GSC Championship since 1976. He is the third Freshman of the Year to also earn medalist honors, joining Shorter’s Silas Too in 2014 and Harding’s Daniel Kirwa in 2008. The win is Chelanga’s second-straight after running a previous-personal best time of 23:56.80 to win the Crimson Classic 8K on Oct. 16. The top six runners in the race all ran a season-best time, including Lee’s Harold Smith, who led the Flames with a runner-up time of 24:45.61.

NOTABLE
Future GSC member Mississippi College also competed in the meet, but was not eligible for GSC awards.

UP NEXT
Eligible teams will compete next on Nov. 7 in the NCAA South Regional, hosted by Saint Leo University and the Tampa Sports Commission at the Abbey Course in Saint Leo, Florida.
