Pensacola, Fla. - West Alabama won the 2014 GSC Men's Soccer Tournament Championship on Sunday at Brosnaham Park.
No. 4 Shorter and No. 2 West Alabama capped off Championship Sunday, taking to the pitch as both were in search for each of the program's first GSC Soccer Tournament Championships, respectively. The Tigers were making their second-consecutive GSC Tournament Final appearance. Shorter, in its first year of eligibility, made its way to the final on a three-match winning streak.
The match featured the 2014 GSC Player of the Year Thibault Charmey (West Alabama) versus the 2014 GSC Freshman of the Year, Shorter's Charlie Dennis.
Charmey, the GSC leader in goals, notched his 13th of the season, an assist from Vitor Gazza, to put UWA up early in the 12th minute, 1-0. Thirty minutes later, at the tail end of the half, Charmey notched his second goal of the match, a free kick that slipped through the hands of SU keeper Nicolas Ferrigno.
The Tigers went up 3-0 in the second when Evan Beutler tallied yet another score in the 50th minute, though the shutout was disallowed when SU's Irvin Espinal tacked on his second goal of the tournament to cut into the UWA lead, 3-1, in the 74th minute.
UWA doubled-up SU on shots, 16-8, while the Tigers topped the Hawks in shots on goal, 7-3.
West Alabama improved to 11-6-1 on the season, while the win marked the first-ever GSC Tournament Championship in UWA soccer program history. With the loss, Shorter closed 2014 with a 9-10-1 record. Charmey, with two goals in the final, was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
Many GSC teams will tune in live for the 2014 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Selection Show, which is tabbed to follow the women's show on Monday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 pm (ET).
