GSC Announces Football Players of the Week, October 27

North Alabama quarterback Luke Wingo and
West Georgia defensive end Darrius Caldwell have been named the Gulf South Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games played in Week Seven of the 2014 season.
Valdosta State placekicker Anthony Pistelli was also tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week and
Florida Tech quarterback Mark Cato earned the Freshman of the Week.
Wingo takes home his first-ever award and is UNA's second Offensive winner of the season after leading the Lions to a 31-28 come-from-behind home win over West Georgia in Saturday's GSC-TV contest. The junior completed 25-of-33 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 21 yards and another TD. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native tossed UNA's lone score of first half and opened the third quarter with a go-ahead, one-yard TD run at 11:54. He saved his best for the Lions' last possession, leading a seven-play, 80-yard drive in the final two minutes. Wingo completed back-to-back passes, capped by the go-ahead, nine-yard strike with 44 seconds left to play.
Caldwell is the second consecutive UWG defender to claim accolades and the Wolves' third overall winner this year. The junior spearheaded the Wolves' defense versus UNA with nine total tackles, while also racking up a game-high five solo stops. The Atlanta, Ga. native was active in the Lions' backfield , leading all players with 2.5 sacks for 11 yards and added one forced fumble.
Pistelli records his second honor of the season after putting together a perfect performance in VSU's 37-6 home victory over Shorter. The sophomore connected on all three of his field goal attempts, while also going 4-for-4 on point-after kicks. The Thomasville, Ga. native provided the Blazers' first points of the day, tying the score at 3-3 with a 33-yard field goal at 9:17 in the first frame. He added a 40-yarder in the third quarter and closed out the game's scoring via a 42-yard with one tick on the clock in the third frame.
Cato secures his sixth Freshman accolade of the year after leading FIT to a 44-9 road decision over Mississippi College. The Alachua, Fla. native completed 29-of-39 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns, leading the Panthers to a school-record 599 total yards. Cato became just the second GSC passer to throw for five scores in a game this season.
