GSC Announces 2013 All-Conference Softball Team
Birmingham, Ala. — The Gulf South Conference office has announced the 2013 All-GSC Softball Team and award winners and regular season winner
Alabama Huntsville leads a diverse pack of 26 awardees.
UAH had six student-athletes earn All-GSC honors, five on the First Team honors. Both were league highs. The Chargers also dominated the individual awards with
Kimberly Jack earning Freshman and Pitcher of the Year honors and
Les Stuedeman winning the Coach of the Year Award.
Four-time defending league champion Valdosta State added five players on the team, with three First Team selections that include Player of the Year
Courtney Albritton. North Alabama and West Alabama each had four picks, with two coming on both teams.
West Georgia had two All-GSC selections with one on the First Team.
Christian Brothers and
Delta State had just one selection each but both were on the first team.
West Florida had two picks but they were both on the Second Team. There were 11 juniors, seven seniors, five freshmen and three sophomores on this year’s squad. Seven of the juniors were on the First Team with four seniors and juniors populating the Second Team.
Valdosta State’s Albritton Named Player of the Year
Despite switching positions,
Valdosta State second baseman Courtney Albritton earned the
Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season. The Sycamore, Ga. native was named Player of the Week once this season and becomes the first player to earn back-to-back Player of the Year honors since 2007-08. Albritton leads the league in runs scored (57), home runs (16), total bases (126) and slugging percentage (.797). She also is among the league leaders in several major offensive statistics including runs batted in (44, 7
th), batting average (.411, 3
rd), on-base percentage (.457, 7
th), hits (65, 2
nd) and doubles (13, 9
th).
Alabama Huntsville’s Jack Named Pitcher and Freshman of the Year
Alabama Huntsville’s Kimberly Jack earned
Pitcher of the Year and
Freshman of the Year honors, becoming the first UAH pitcher to win the top pitcher award since 2009 and first Charger to win top freshman honors since 2008.
Jack, from Nashville, Tenn., has pitched in a league-high 38 games, with five starts and four complete games. She has a 14-4 record and leads the nation with seven saves and has finished 31 total contests. Her 1.22 earned run average over 108 2/3 innings leads the conference, as does her .212 opponent batting average. She has allowed just 19 walks while striking out 65.
Alabama Huntsville’s Stuedeman Named Coach of the Year
UAH’s Les Stuedeman is the GSC
Coach of the Year for the fifth time in six years and eighth time in her career. After a 7-7 start, the Chargers fought back to finish 35-13 and are among the top ranked teams in the South Region. UAH went 23-6 in league play to win the regular season crown and earned the top seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament.
