Tunica, MS—West Florida increased its 2013 Gulf South Conference Spring Sports Championship total to four, holding on to its first day lead in the GSC Men's Golf Championship Tournament at Tunica National Golf Club in Tunica, MS.

UWF led the entire tournament, entering Tuesday’s action with a seven stroke edge before holding off a Final Round charge by defending champion North Alabama.  The Argonauts shot a +22, 886, while UNA finished just five shots back at 891.

2014-15 member Union University made its presence felt in its first-ever GSC Tournament, claiming third-place via a +32, 896.  UU entered Tuesday in second place before settling for the third spot.  Peach State rivals West Georgia (+45, 909) and Valdosta State (+49, 913) were fourth and fifth, respectively.  Sixth-place Delta State came within one shot of VSU (+50, 914), while 2014-15 member Shorter (+55, 919) and Christian Brothers (+96, 960) completed the field.  Shorter and Union were required to compete in this year’s event as non-counters, therefore they were not eligible for Tournament honors.

Union posted two of the three top scorers, No. 1 Kody Alexander (-2, 214) and No. 2 Brett Barry (E, 216), while North Alabama’s Paul McClure was tabbed GSC Individual Medalist after also shooting an even-par, 216.  Alexander was the only golfer to shoot below par for the 36-hole event.  As the Individual Medalist, McClure also led the seven-member All-Tournament Team which featured UWF’s Juan Miguel-Heredia (fourth-place, +2, 218), DSU’s Reed Lindsey (fifth-place, +4, 220), UWF’s Spencer Olson (seventh, +5, 221), UWG’s Corey Evans (eighth, +6, 222) and Kevin Clarke (eighth, +6, 222) and UNA’s Blaise Wilson (eighth, +6, 222).  Shorter’s Patric Sundlof tied Lindsey for fifth place.

West Florida also earned the GSC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals, while West Florida and Valdosta State also hold out post-season hopes.  The 2013 NCAA Division II Super Regionals will be held from May 6-8 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills, FL.
